Oh My, Talking Gorillas

I decided to start a continuing series of posts about the environmental books that I’m crazy about.

In one of my classes for school I recently had to read the book, Ishmael. It is one of those books that gets stuck in you head for days after you’ve finished reading it. I found myself in another class relating everything I heard to the theories set forth in Ishmael. After reading it, I found it hard to not think about how the entire world is structured. The best part though is that when you read it, you won’t think, “This is going to change the way I think about the world!” It just kind of happens. Maybe it won’t change everyone who reads it, but for a second it will make anyone question the way we live and how our dominating culture formed.

It is a fairly quick read and entertaining for a book containing mostly philosophy and history. You really wouldn’t realize it if you weren’t reading critically.

If there is one thing you should know about this book, it’s that the main character is an intelligent, talking Gorilla. ya.

I once had a literature professor who said something about books that will stay with me for a long time. He said, “Books come to us at certain times in our life when we are meant to read what they have to say.” It has really resonated with me because many times in school I was required to read a book, but I wasn’t mature enough or learned enough or in the right frame of mind to read it. Ishmael came to me at a time in my life when it really impacted me. If this isn’t the right time for you to read it, I encourage you to save it away for another time. Whenever that time is, you will read this book, and it will touch your soul, guaranteed.
